Types of fostering

Every child is different and deserves care shaped to their specific needs and situations.

At Tree House, our carers provide homes for children of all ages 0-18 and we carefully match each child with the best family for their needs and personality. Some children may need long-term placements with a family that can offer love and stability. Other children may need emergency care due to unexpected circumstances and will need reassurance and a friendly face.

As a Tree House carer you might provide some of the following care:

  • Short-term
  • Long-term
  • Emergency
  • Respite
  • Therapeutic/Trauma Intervention
  • Fostering a child with a disability

Therapeutic services

Therapeutic Fostering sounds complicated, but really it’s just about giving our foster carers the tools they need to understand and build a positive relationship with their children.

Many of the children who come into foster care have suffered abuse or neglect and this impacts the care that they need. As a Tree House foster carer, you will be trained in ‘Trauma and Attachment theory’. You will learn therapeutic fostering techniques that will help you deal with any challenging behaviours and create a real understanding and connection with your child.

You will also have the support of our Trauma and Attachment Consultant, John, meeting him regularly for group training as well as individual consultation sessions.

Name: John Anderson

Role: Trauma and Attachment Therapist

Time with Tree House: Over 10 years

Provides: Level 1 and 2 Therapeutic Parenting courses, foster carer consultation sessions, The go-to Therapeutic Parenting Handbook for Foster Carers

“Tree House carers are given the opportunity to learn about therapeutic fostering in the dedicated training courses. These courses are designed to be accessible and very relevant to the real life experiences of fostering. Monthly consultations are also offered to foster carers. These are a chance to reflect on therapeutic fostering ideas and to discuss how to handle difficult dynamics or stuck patterns of behaviour. It’s also a time I like to use to support foster carers – the trauma experiences of the children in their care can rub off on the carers and it’s vital that we also provide them with care and support. The principles of a therapeutic approach aren’t just focused on how foster carers care for the children. The ideas are also encouraged throughout the whole organisation so that there is consistency and so that everybody can benefit from the therapeutic approach.”

All of our foster carers receive a copy of our book, written with John, ‘The Go-To Therapeutic Parenting Handbook for Foster Carers’, an on-the-go guide full of bite-size themes and advice. We also cover these themes in our training sessions, support groups and monthly newsletters, so you can learn to apply the techniques in your home.
